The White House today released a photo of U.S. President Barack Obama, practicing skeet shooting in the retreat of Camp David, after several conservatives question the veracity of a statement made by the president on the matter.
The image was taken by the official photographer for the White House, Pete Souza, at Camp David on 4 August, the day of the 51st birthday of President.
It shows Obama shooting a shotgun and wearing earmuffs and black glasses.
In an interview with the New Republic published on Sunday, Obama said that at the presidential residence rest of Camp David (Maryland) skeet shooting practice at times, never with her daughters but often with guests to which get there.
"I have a deep respect for the traditions of hunting," said the president in the same interview when speaking of open debate in the country about weapons and their efforts to achieve greater control of their sale and possession.
According to Obama, "if you grew up and your father gave you a hunting rifle when you were 10 (years), and went out and were spending the day with him and your uncles, and it became part of family traditions, it is easy to see why would you want to protect that. "
Conservative media and congressmen as Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, later questioned the veracity of the statements of the President.
"If (Obama) takes to the plate, * why we have not heard of it? * Why have not we seen pictures?" Asked the lawmaker.
Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, said not knowing how often the president skeet shooting practice in Camp David and the White House has not given more details.
In the debate that has followed the shooting in December in Newtown, where Adam Lanza killed 20 children and 6 adults in a school after murdering his mother before taking his own life, Obama has stressed his respect for the Second Amendment of the Constitution , which protects the right of Americans to bear arms.
But he has also designed a plan to reduce violence caused by guns and is urging Congress to pass laws to restrict access and availability of assault weapons and high capacity magazines, as well as to ensure a universal background check .
